Gannett to pause AI experiment after botched sports stories

By Clare Duffy | CNNNewspaper chain Gannett has paused the use of an artificial intelligence tool to write high school sports dispatches after the technology made several major flubs in articles in at least one of its papers.Several high school sports reports written by an AI service called LedeAI and published by the Columbus Dispatch earlier this month went viral on social media this week — and not in a good way. The reports were mocked on social media for being repetitive, lacking key details, using odd language and generally sounding like they’d been written by a computer with no actual knowledge of sports.CNN identified several other local Gannett outlets, including the Louisville Courrier Journal, AZ Central, Florida Today and the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, that have all published similar stories written by LedeAI in recent weeks. Many of the reports feature identical language, describing “high school football action,” noting when one team “took victory away from” another and ...Owners of Oakland group homes slapped with lawsuit

(KRON) -- The owners of several group homes in Oakland that serve mentally ill residents were slapped with a lawsuit for illegally evicting and abusing tenants, according to the city attorney. The suit filed by Oakland City Attorney Barbara Parker claims that the sober living houses also created a public nuisance in neighborhoods, and racked up hundreds of police responses from the Oakland Police Department.Oakland police reports show a pattern of "horrific and unlawful treatment" inflicted on tenants, the lawsuit states. The lawsuit, first reported by Oaklandside, was filed against One Rose of Unity, unity's founder Angelique Austin, her son Terrell Bailey, as well as several landlords and employees who were tasked with managing Independent Living Facilities.ILFs are unlicensed, unregulated boarding homes from adults. "The lack of regulation and oversight of ILFs creates opportunities to use this business model to exploit low-income tenants," Parker wrote. RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — Civil rights advocates and Democratic state legislators defended and praised Wednesday a state Supreme Court justice for suing this week to block a state ethics panel from investigating her public comments that she says are protected by the First Amendment.Leaders of the North Carolina Black Alliance, Emancipate NC and a minister spoke at a Legislative Building news conference in support of Anita Earls, who is the only Black woman on the seven-member court. They said that officials were trying to unfairly silence Earls, a Democrat, because she was addressing important topics on race and gender. “In her fight for justice for all people, she had the audacity to speak out about racism and sexism in the North Carolina judicial system,” said Rep. Renée Price, an Orange County Democrat and Alliance board member. Earls filed her unusual federal lawsuit on Tuesday against the North Carolina Judicial Standards Commission, which told her earlier this month that an i...Panthers waive last year’s 3rd-round draft pick QB Matt Corral, claim 3 players off waivers

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — The Carolina Panthers have waived quarterback Matt Corral, their third-round draft pick in 2022, without him ever having taken a snap from center in a regular-season game for the franchise.Corral missed his entire rookie season after suffering a Lisfranc injury in a preseason game against the New England Patriots. The Panthers drafted Bryce Young No. 1 overall and added veteran Andy Dalton via free agency this offseason under new coach Frank Reich, leaving Corral’s chances of making the roster in doubt.Corral was 28 of 47 passing for 248 yards during three preseason games this year. The Panthers claimed three players off waivers on Wednesday — offensive tackle Calvin Throckmorton from the New Orleans Saints, linebacker Claudin Cherelus from the New York Jets, and cornerback D’Shawn Jamison from the San Francisco 49ers. BUFFALO BILLS (14-4)EXPECTATIONS: The Bills might not be the Super Bowl favorites as they were touted entering last season, and yet they remain a formidable team with Josh Allen entering his sixth year overseeing one of the NFL’s most productive offenses. What also should work in the three-time defending AFC East champion’s favor is not having to endure the numerous on- and off-field issues, injuries and tragedies that led to the Bills being emotionally drained in closing last season with a thud in a 27-10 loss to Cincinnati. The team dealt with safety Damar Hamlin’s near-death experience on the field in Cincinnati on Jan. 2, the death of tight end Dawson Knox’s younger brother, Luke, two snowstorms disrupting the team’s schedule and losing DE Von Miller and S Micah Hyde to season-ending injuries. The challenge on offense is for second-year coordinator Ken Dorsey to utilize his various new weapons — speedy receivers Deonte Hardy and Trent Sherfield, and rookie tight end Dalton Kinca...Remains of Vermont World War II soldier to be buried at Arlington National Cemetery

MONACO (AP) — UEFA does not want Champions League games to match the World Cup with double-digit minutes of stoppage time that its top soccer official called “absolutely absurd” on Wednesday.Adding so many extra minutes over a full season is bad for players’ health, UEFA Chief of Football Zvonimir Boban said.“Player welfare is really some kind of small tragedy,” Boban, a former AC Milan and Croatia star midfielder, said at a UEFA briefing on refereeing issues on the eve of the Champions League group-stage draw.FIFA pushed referees at the men’s and women’s World Cups in the past nine months to let the game clock routinely run from the regulation 90 minutes to 100-plus in the second half. FIFA wanted all goal celebrations, substitutions, injuries and suspected time-wasting taken into account. The policy has been backed by FIFA president Gianni Infantino saying it gave fans better value for money amid concern the ball was in active play for as few as 50 to 55 minutes at many games.Socce...When does fall start in Denver?
