Sweet, Spicy, Savory: Texas business creates Mexican candy-flavored apples BROWNSVILLE, Texas (ValleyCentral) — A local shop in Brownsville turned a simple candy apple hobby into a business. Maribel Lopez, owner of Candy Apple Factory, started her business 21 years ago after visiting a local candy apple stand in California. Lopez said during her trips to visit family in California, they would buy apples after running errands, return to her uncle's house and spend time together. This is where her idea of opening her own candy apple shop was born. (Photo by: Gerardo Salinas/ValleyCentral)After trial and error to perfect her recipe, she opened her first location on Palm Boulevard. She started off with cherry candy apples before creating her most popular flavors. Inspired by her culture, Lopez and her mom decided to experiment and create her own recipe, introducing new flavors such as watermelon and pineapple with a kick."One day when I was out of town and my mom was still at it, she called me saying 'We Got It! We Got It!,'" Lopez said.Flavors such as spicy w...

Rockies Journal: Road hitting woes continue — except for Nolan Jones

Rockies Journal: Road hitting woes continue — except for Nolan Jones Somebody forgot to tell Nolan Jones that the Rockies can’t hit away from Coors Field.Entering Saturday’s game against the Cubs at Wrigley Field, the rookie outfielder was slashing .285/.368/.536 with nine home runs on the road. Those numbers are on par with his home numbers: .284/.383/.503, eight home runs. That balance is another reason why Jones gets my vote for Rockies MVP, beating out shortstop Ezequiel Tovar. And while I’m certain that Diamondbacks outfielder Corbin Carroll will be named the National League rookie of the year, Jones makes a strong case. As my colleague, Kyle Newman, noted recently, Jones ranks second in the majors in average with runners in scoring position, hitting .420. That’s impressive.Unfortunately for the Rockies, Jones’ road success is an aberration. Finding a way to hit away from Coors Field is this team’s Rubik’s Cube.Entering Saturday’s penultimate away game of the season, the Rockies’ road record wa...

Good thing, given that the Pac-12’s collecting with interest this fall.“If he’s going to continue to play at a high level, one of the things he needs to do, and he started to do it against CSU, is taking off and running,” Jesse Palmer, the former Florida QB and current ESPN analyst, told me over the phone a few days back.“He’s not the most dynamic runner at the quarterback position in the country. But if you can get four or five yards, limit the distance on third down, protect yourself and get out of bounds, I think that’ll be a key thing for (the Oregon) game Saturday and that’s a big key for him this season.” Read more…Colorado Buffaloes safety Shilo Sanders (21) heads to the end...

Reddick now in NASCAR’s playoff mix at Texas after missing cut last year and then winning there Tyler Reddick this time made it into the round of 12 that starts in Texas, where last year he won a tumultuous and tiring race right after just missing the cut in NASCAR’s playoffs. With a win at Kansas after opening these Cup Series playoffs with a runner-up finish at Darlington, Reddick advanced and already is thinking about what he needs to do to make it past this three-race round in his first season with 23XI Racing.“It’s about having smooth days and somewhat consistent finishes,” said Reddick, who finished 15th at Bristol last weekend. “I think if we can stay in the top 15 each of these races in this next round, when even regardless of a win, I think we’ll be in good shape to make it through the round of eight. And then obviously it’s a little trickier.”Of course, another win at Texas on Sunday would give Reddick an automatic pass into the round of eight — same as a win would do for any of the other 11 remaining playoff contenders. That group includes Kyle Busch, now drivin...
