DENVER (AP) — The Colorado Avalanche have avoided arbitration with forward Ross Colton, signing him to a four-year contract. The deal is worth $16 million with a $4 million annual salary-cap hit, according to a person with knowledge of the move. The person spoke Monday to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the team doesn't disclose contract terms.Colorado acquired Colton from cap-strapped Tampa Bay prior to the NHL draft for the 37th pick. Colton was a restricted free agent whose arbitration rights could have hurt the Lightning, making him their top trade candidate. He was also with the Lightning the following year when they lost to the Avalanche in the final.“Ross is a hard-working, two-way center with a championship pedigree,” Avalanche general manager Chris MacFarland said at the time of the trade. “He has physicality to his game, is u...Nick Pivetta pitches way into Red Sox history books with dominant relief performance

Even without Rafael Devers, who’s day-to-day with right calf tightness, the Red Sox lineup is relentless. On Monday evening in Oakland, they collected 10 hits and demolished the downtrodden A’s, 7-0.Aside from Yu Chang, every batter collected a hit, but Connor Wong was the only Red Sox player with a multi-hit game. The catcher went 3-for-4 with a run and three RBI.But all due respect to the impressive Boston bats, this night belonged to Nick Pivetta. After Brennan Bernardino opened the game with a pair of scoreless innings, Pivetta took over and pitched one of the best relief performances in baseball history.Over six innings, he induced 14 swings & misses, didn’t allow a single hit, and racked up strikeouts. With his tenth strikeout, he joined Hideo Nomo (April 4, 2001) and Smoky Joe Wood (July 29, 1911) as the only three Red Sox pitchers to reach double-digit Ks without allowing a hit. When Pivetta reached 12 (his seventh consecutive K), he tied Diego Segui (1974...Deadly crash shuts down all southbound I-15 lanes in Fallbrook

LONDON — Arch-Brexiteer Nigel Farage thinks Brexit has failed. Almost two-thirds of Brits seem to agree with him.According to a YouGov poll released Tuesday, 63 percent of Britons now consider Brexit to have been more of a failure than a success — the latest piece of research which points to anti-Brexit sentiment in the U.K. three years on from the country’s formal exit from the EU. Just 12 percent of those asked see Brexit as more of a success than a failure, while 18 percent said it was neither. The gloomy view of Brexit brings Brits into line with Farage, one of the biggest advocates of the country’s departure from the European Union. The former Brexit Party leader told the BBC in May that the U.K. had not benefited economically from leaving the bloc, blaming the ruling Conservatives for having “let us down very, very badly.”The YouGov polling shows 58 percent of those who voted to leave the EU in 2016 now think the government is handling Britain’s ex...How Chicago Cubs top pick Matt Shaw was helped by the Cape Cod League and a former Red Sox World Series champ

Any time Jarrod Saltalamacchia had someone inquire in the offseason about one of the top collegiate players in the 2023 draft, Matt Shaw, the former big-leaguer told them all the same thing.“Listen, he checks every box,” Saltalamacchia would say. “If you pass on this kid, this guy is for sure one of those no doubt going to get to the big leagues, going to have success, he’s going to be a dynamic player.”Saltalamacchia had seen firsthand how impactful Shaw can be when he served as the assistant coach on Shaw’s Cape Cod League team, the Bourne Braves, last summer where the now 21-year-old shortstop took the next step in his development en route to becoming the Chicago Cubs’ first-round pick last week.“He’s just an unbelievable kid,” Saltalamacchia told the Tribune. “He can play all the positions. He’s a great teammate and he’s always working with other guys. It’s a kid you definitely want in your organ...Latest news
