De La Salle’s defense dominates as Spartans shut out McClymonds It wasn’t easy. But De La Salle, playing on its home field in Concord, eventually put away Oakland powerhouse McClymonds 21-0 on Friday night to stretch its winning streak to four games.Dominic Kelley scored on two touchdown runs and Toa Faavae threw his first touchdown pass of the season – a 38-yarder over the middle to Robert Santiago – to account for the scoring. But the story of the night was defense.De La Salle’s was more dominant than Mack’s as Drew Cunningham and Co. had another impressive performance.Santiago’s interception with 2:51 left put the bow on the shutout.De La Salle (4-2) drove inside McClymonds’ 20-yard line four times in the first half but scored only once, on a 5-yard run by Kelley early in the third quarter.Sophomore quarterback Brayden Knight came off the bench to complete three passes on the scoring drive, including a huge pass to tight end DJ Asiasi that gave the Spartans a first-and-goal at the 6.Aside from that, De La Salle couldn’t convert against a defens...

SF Giants start post-Gabe Kapler era on familiar note in loss to Dodgers SAN FRANCISCO — The post-Gabe Kapler era started the same way his tenure ended: in defeat. With interim skipper Kai Correa at the helm, the Giants’ bats were bleak as ever against Dodgers starter Lance Lynn, while Los Angeles’ powerful lineup lit up San Francisco rookie starter Keaton Winn for a trio of home runs (Will Smith, Freddie Freeman, J.D. Martinez).Final score: 6-2.1) No .500 finishIt was an inevitability that became a reality Friday night: the Giants will finish 2023 with a worse record than in 2022.That’s the kind of stagnation that can get a manager fired, and guess what — it did.The Giants needed to sweep the Dodgers this weekend to avoid securing a losing record, but the homer barrage against San Francisco’s rookie starter meant that dream died in the first game of the series. They have finished better than .500 only once — in their 107-win 2021 — in five seasons under Farhan Zaidi.Good news: They can’t finish any worse than Zaidi’s f...
