Why China’s police state has a precinct near you

Beijing has been operating an overseas police station in New York. And London. And Rome. And Tokyo. And Toronto. The Department of Justice’s indictment of two Chinese citizens this week for using the unlawful Chinese police station in Manhattan to go after dissidents highlights the growing tentacles of Beijing’s overseas operations, which it uses to harass and silence critics around the world. The network also shows the extent to which Beijing has managed to conduct influence campaigns inside Western countries and violate others’ sovereignty while mostly evading law enforcement.Security agencies across Europe and the Americas are investigating more than 100 facilities that an advocacy organization exposed in September as overseas outposts of China’s security apparatus. In the U.S., that includes at least two others besides the one targeted this week.“These secret police stations reveal the CCP’s blatant disregard and disrespect for the American rules and privacy,” said Rep. The MBTA hopes to restore the entire Blue Line to full-speed operation by November, and officials will end service early on several nights in the next month to accelerate necessary repairs, new T boss Phil Eng said Wednesday.A bit more than a week into his tenure as general manager, Eng offered an early sketch of the work required to lift slow zones on one of the four subway lines that have been hamstrung by limited speeds due to newly confirmed infrastructure flaws. Plans to fix the problems on the other three lines are still in development.Eng said the T is aiming to lift all remaining Blue Line speed restrictions “no later than November,” which would be eight months after MBTA officials suddenly expanded slow zones across the system.Eng told the T’s Board of Directors that crews in the short term will aim to replace 1,950 feet of rail and 465 rail ties, plus tamp 3,300 feet of track, between Bowdoin and Aquarium stations. Sitting in a meeting of LGBTQ leaders reacting to the tragedy, he realized the help that would be forthcoming had its roots in the past.“Who created this community?” he asked himself. “Who laid this foundation?”The end result of his questions is the film “Greetings from Queertown: Orlando,” which debuted at the Florida Film Festival on Monday. For Todd, and others, it has been both a personal journey — and an educational one.“I say I was raised by Orlando’s gay community,” says Todd, the publisher of gay-issues newspaper Watermark and executive producer of the film. “I wanted to honor the people who raised me.”“Greetings from Queertown” features interviews with notable figures on Central Florida’s LGBTQ scene: City commissioner Patty Sheehan, playwright-actor Michae...Robert Kennedy Jr. announces Democratic presidential run
