Make your camping trip more sustainable by swapping out this one item

California has a pretty efficient system set up to handle propane tanks used for barbecues. People buy a tank at full price, empty it cooking up great meals, then bring that tank back to one of thousands of retailers, where they can swap it out at half-price for one that’s already been refilled by trained professionals. That system keeps most BBQ propane tanks out of landfills, while reducing the number of tanks that need to be manufactured. It also brings the cost down for consumers, and it makes propane use safe and convenient for all parties. But we have yet to set up a similarly effective system for the estimated 4 to 7 million one-pound propane cylinders that Californians use with camping stoves each year, or for the untold numbers of smaller isobutane canisters paired with backpacking stoves. Those tanks often aren’t re-used, and they often do become hazardous waste. To date, efforts to stem the tide of single-use fuel canisters, both through legislation and by setting up reuse p...San Pablo sunglass thieves arrested with $13K worth of stolen shades

In a 2021 interview with the New York Times, UPS CEO Carol Tomé made a striking claim: She no longer believed in the godfather of trickle-down economics. “For a long time, I was sort of a Milton Friedman person: ‘The purpose of the corporation is to create value for the shareholder.’ I’m very much now of the belief that if you take care of the needs of all stakeholders, you actually create value for the share price. And taking care of the needs of all the stakeholders includes your employees.”The change of heart was a remarkable admission for a C-suite executive who had paid little public attention to the question of workers rights during her two decades as a leader in corporate America. Yet even as Tomé positioned herself as a friend of the workers who make her company run, she continued to donate money to national Republicans set on gutting worker power and maximizing salaries for America’s top earners.Tomé has donated over $70,000 in the past decade to national politicians and co...Ex-NBA star Dwayne Wade to join WNBA’s Chicago Sky ownership group

Louis Kahn, one of the greatest American architects of the 20th century, used to talk to bricks. When he’d ask a brick what it wanted to be, he’d say the brick would inevitably answer, “an arch.” And surely enough, Kahn created some phenomenally beautiful brick arches in his various projects across the world. If Kahn were alive today and were to ask an office building what it wanted to be, the words he would be least likely to hear would be “an apartment building.”Yes, exceptions exist but as has been widely documented, the characteristics that make structures well suited to serve office workers are generally the same characteristics that make them ill suited to serve residents. Retrofitting office buildings to become apartments is climatically responsible and needs to be part of the solution to reimagining downtowns. The economics of such transformations, however, require significant subsidies and write downs in asset values. Absent those subsidies, the likelihood of conversions…Re...Taylor Swift's plane arrived in Colorado
